Harrell “Duane” Greer of Houston, Texas was called home by Our Heavenly Father on Sunday, June 14, 2015. Duane was born the middle child of a Navy family in Lakehurst, New Jersey. Duane attended Hardin-Simmons University, where he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice. It was there where he met his beloved bride of 42 years, Shirley Sheriff. Together they lived in Houston and reared their precious children, Allyn, Stephanie, and David. They were also blessed with two adorable grandchildren, Braelyn and Axyl.
As his children often jokingly asked him, “Is this going to be a long story?” They respond, “Yes, Dad, it is.” It has to be long to give tribute to this wonderful son, brother, husband, dad, papaw, uncle and friend.

Duane was a man full of stories to share, and always appreciated the little things in life that brought humor and joy to him, and in turn to all who knew him. Duane was a devoted family man while working for 30 years as an Allstate Agent. Duane valued his Christian upbringing by his parents, Harrell and Helen. He was active in Sagemont Church where he enjoyed the choir and being part of the Christmas programs in which he was honored to depict the life of Jesus. For the last several years he has enjoyed the fellowship of East Haven Baptist Church. Duane also enjoyed being a member of the Lion’s Club for 27 years.

Duane was a man of routine, but never of predictability. He loved his once a week card game, his almost daily golf games, and would always have a laugh to share with the cherished friends. Duane was also known for showing up to pick up Shirley from the airport in a frog costume, dressed as Zorro or Prince Charming, holding a sweet, hilarious, and slightly embarrassing sign with a poem he had created for his love. His creative mind kept Shirley, his sisters and children enjoying surprises and laughs throughout his life.

He loved golfing, especially at the Southwyck Golf Club, having worked, volunteered, and played there for many years. It could be said that, if it happened to interfere with either golf or cards, he would have missed his own funeral.

Duane loved to learn, laugh, love, and share knowledge, stories, and experiences with loved ones. Duane had a brilliant mind, a kind heart, and a playful spirit; yet he had the strength to be stern when the situation required it. His greatest joys, golfing aside, were sharing time, meals, and stories with family, friends, and loved ones. His greatest strength was that anyone who met him never stayed a stranger. He will always be loved and greatly missed, and his legacy and stories will live on forever.

Duane is survived by Shirley & children: Allyn Duane, Stephanie Marie and David Jackson; his grandchildren, Braelyn and Axyl; his sisters, Joyce Brasher, Patsie Calvin and Susan Jackson; mother-in-law Shirley Fay Sheriff; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Susan and Bob Vest and Jacki Clark, nieces Susan Stivers, Melody Vest, Jamie Baker, Karie Hagy and nephews Brian Calvin, Stonewall Clark and Oliver Clark; great nieces and nephews Abigail, Hope, Noelle, Nathanael, Paisley, Callie, Camden, Mia and Malici. Many more loved family members and an endless number of friends.

The service celebrating Duane’s life will be held at Niday Funeral Home – Beamer Chapel at 3:00pm Friday, June 19, 2015, with visitation one hour prior to the service.

I just learned of my very best friend passing, Duane was my
very very best friend since 1978, I moved and retired in
2014. Duane met me shortly after I retired for Bar-B Que in
Pearland I am sitting in Southwyk’s parking lot and must I
admit I have tears rolling down my cheeks. Everyone is
blessed with that one friend that would be there no matter
how badly you may messed up, not judgemental just
supportive. Duane was mine and I hope I was his, I watched
the kids grow up and to some degree shared your ups &
downs with Duane, I also blessed to hear how proud your dad
was of his children (and the Tremendous credit he gave to
 Shirley)

I sorry for the length of my tribute, I have lost the one
true friend of a life time.

I do not know to whom this will be sent, I hope I get a.
Response to jet let me know it has been read by his family.

Till we meet again on that course in Heaven

 Jack
